Sales Over 50% Make Me Wet My Pants With Happiness
Carter's had a 60%-off sale for Memorial Day. They threw in an extra 10% off for military members. So Jake and I bought a ton of clothes for Camille at 70% off.
If you just said "Sweet Zombie Jesus, that's a great deal," then mmmmhhmmmm you are correct.
We spent $77. If my math skills are up to scratch, 77 is 30% of 256.67. So we got clothes worth $256.67 for $77.
I know what I'm doing next Memorial Day Weekend.

Eight Months Old
I can't think of anything to write that isn't woefully cliche, so I'll just get to the good part: pictures!

Crestwood Park
The U2 concert last night left us with a small challenge: what would we do with Camille while we were rocking out? Jake's mom watched her until 10, and then his sister picked Camille up. We decided just to let Cami and Jake's sister have a sleepover at her place, even though I had minor panic attacks the entire time.
Yew Tew
Last March, Jake and I bought tickets to the U2: 360 concert that was supposed to be rolling through SLC in May. Jake loves U2 and was super excited about going, but his little dreams were dashed when Bono hurt his back. They postponed the 360 Tour while Bono was recovering, and Jake cried himself to sleep for about a week.

Yoyo and the Yarn-Eating Monster
I finished my Yoyo doll!
It's not exactly the right color but that's all I had on hand.
Camille helped me crochet Yoyo. And by "helped" I mean "chewed on yarn until it was all soggy."
She was so exhausted from gnawing on yarn that she passed out, which gave me some time to actually finish the doll. She was playing with it when I had yet to attach the ears, and now that it has ears, I wonder what she'll think of it.

Parking Challenged
I always used to park like a professional. I could pull into any spot on the first try and be perfectly centered. I never hit the curb. I always pulled in enough to still be visible but not have my car's ass be hanging out.
If there was parking in the Olympics, I would have been a gold medalist.
All of that is no more. I don't know what happened.
I park too close on the passenger side and too far away on the driver's side. Every. Time. Even when I think about it as I'm parking, I still park like this. I'm one of those people that I rage at in crowded parking lots. At least I'm not over the line. Yet.

Hoops and Yoyo: A Crochet Challenge
SciFriday
If the movie "Finding Nemo" had been based on reality, it would have been way different.
We all know that Great White Sharks don't hang out with Hammerheads and form Fishaholics Anonymous meetings in sunken WWII submarines. We all know that fish can't read. We all know that a clownfish would last about 10 minutes if it ventured away from a reef - not purely because of predation, but also temperature. The scene where Marlin and Dory dive into that chasm? They would have frozen to death or been crushed by the pressure before finding that mask.
We all know that stuff above, but we don't care. It's a Disney movie. Talking pelicans? Sure! They're entertaining! We expect talking empathetic animals in Disney movies. In fact, a Disney movie without talking animals or inanimate objects is bullshit. So what's my beef with Finding Nemo?
Clownfish.
At the beginning of the movie, we are soothed by a tranquil scene of a big pink sea anemone perched on the edge of a reef. Two clownfish are hanging out in this anemone.
Presumably, Marlin is the daddy, and Coral is the mommy. They have a big bunch of eggs hidden in a little cave below the sea anemone. When asked about what to name their babies, Marlin replies, "We'll call this half Marlin Jr, and this half Coral Jr."
No you won't, Marlin. There will be no Coral Jrs. All of your babies are going to be boys.
All clownfish are born male. 100%. There are no baby girl clownfish. Sorry. In fact, most clownfish are male. Generally, the only female clownfish are the ones that are in charge of their anemone.
It's depicted in popular culture that an anemone is a house for one clownfish, or a little family of clownfish. This isn't exactly true. Depending upon the size of an anemone, it can house several clownfish. A group of clownfish living on a single anemone is kind of like a pack of wolves: there are a bunch of underlings, and one breeding alpha pair. But unlike wolves, the critter in charge of a clownfish group is a big bitchy female.
With Marlin and Coral, Coral would have been the fish in charge. She would have been bigger than Marlin, and he would have been her bitch. They would have had several other male clownfish living with them, but they would have all been considered juveniles; that is, they wouldn't be eligible for mating. And they all would have bowed down every time Coral swam by.
Coral dies. She gets eaten by a barracuda. And apparently, the barracuda has figured out how to suck eggs out of a tiny cave, because the barracuda eats all but one of the eggs. So when Marlin wakes up (the barracuda punched him out), he discovers that he is all alone in the world, except for this one egg.
In reality, something like this could conceivably happen. If we want to be really accurate, we'll still say there are other males living on the anemone with Coral and Marlin. After Coral dies, the group of clownfish is leaderless. Also, it's a total sausage fest.
OK, so Coral is dead. Marlin and the other male clownfish are all like, "Oh shit! She's dead!" But they're not freaking out too much. And here's why: Marlin, being the highest-ranking male, is just going to turn into a female. It's gender reassignment surgery, only without the surgery. He's just going to spontaneously grow a vagina.
So now Marlin is Marlinette. He's all sexy and womanly and he needs a mate. One of the lower-ranking males will step up to the challenge, grow some balls (literally), and become the new mating male.
So in Finding Nemo, Marlin(ette) wouldn't be a single parent. He would be a mommy, and while Nemo's real mommy would be dead, he would still have a daddy. Two daddies. Two mommies? Now I'm confused.
Oh yeah, and by the time Nemo was old enough to go to fish school, Marlinette would have kicked his freeloading gimpy ass to the curb. Since all of the males in the anemone are potentially mates for Marlinette, she wouldn't want one of her own offspring sticking around. Inbreeding is gross.

Birthday Prezzies In Use
Jake got me an awesome camera for my birthday!
My sister got me some adorable baby stuff: a little toothbrush for Camille's new teefers, and some of the most ridiculously adorable shoes that a baby could be found wearing!
I decided to use Jake's present to take pictures of Harper's presents.

Best. Hubbeh. Eva.
The birthday prezzy that Jake got me is here!
It's a camera! Nikon Coolpix S8100, and boy howdy, is it snappy! I haven't had a chance to fiddle with it yet, but tomorrow there's going to be a whole lot of pictures and videos taken of just about everything in my home. Stand by for photo overload!

Good, Get Off My Planet
So, normally I don't overtly ridicule the religious beliefs of others. I'm fairly tolerant of most things, and I believe that if you're doing something that doesn't hurt anyone else, then it's none of my business whether you do it or not. I expect, but don't often receive, the same courtesy from others.
That said, this topic is just too ridiculous not to make fun of. And I'm not afraid to say this: if you believe that this is true, you're a gullible chump and you probably need to be on medication. If you are Christian and you think Harold Camping is one crazy bitch, then none of this rant is directed at you in any way, shape, or form.

The Best Toy of All
On any plastic bag, there's a warning that the plastic bag is NOT a toy, and that you should keep your kids away. I was always like, "Is that really necessary? To tell people this isn't a toy?"
Apparently, it is.
Camille will forego any other toy in favor of a plastic bag. She's especially fond of commandeering trash bags from the bathroom trash bin and scrunching them. I let her fling plastic bags around when I'm standing there watching, but I take the bag away after a minute or so.
She doesn't appreciate that. The screaming that occurs when the plastic bag is removed is akin to the sounds she would make if she were being flayed alive.
Plastic bags aren't toys, unless you're a baby. Then, they become the best toys ever. I can't help but wonder if Camille loves plastic bags so much because they're the forbidden toy. We all know how that goes.

Berfday!
It's my birthday! And the 300th post!
You don't have to ask, I'll tell you: I'm 27.
Jake took me to dinner at a fancy shmancy seafood place last night. We discovered that he is indeed allergic to steelhead, but not to halibut. Then we went over to his mom's house (I thought just to pick up Camille), and they had a surprise cake there for me and they sang happy birthday!
I want to take a moment to introduce a petition to change the Birthday Song. The current one is fucking awful, and it's awkward to sing. I like the one from Futurama.
It doesn't really matter. Just something other than the crap we sing now.
Tonight is my first night of summer class! I'm taking Bioorganic Chemistry. Yes, you're right: it's going to be a hoot! Or a holler. But not both.

Wednesday Gripe
Uhh I posted this on Thursday and then edited the Labels today, and now it's showing as being a Friday post. Blogger is being weird.
Camille is teething.
I hate teething.
Teething makes her cry, and it makes me want to cry. I get no sleep at night, and she begins the day by screaming and crying.
Yesterday, she cried for four hours, broken by maybe five minutes here and there when I would give her a new toy or teether in hopes that the new item would make her happy. And it would... for five minutes. Then she would throw whatever it was on the ground and continue wailing.
She finally fell asleep after four hours of crying. Did I mention that I'm sick once again? So I'm feeling generally crappy with a headache and sore throat and upset stomach, and my apartment turned off the water from 9am to 5pm, so I didn't have any running water all day.
On the upside, feeling cruddy kept me inside, and I got some crocheting done! I made an Ugly Bunny, but in my humble opinion, he's so ugly, he's cute!
This one was made for a friend, so I'm working on another one for Camille. It's purple and rather than being an Ugly Bunny, it's going to be an Ugly Mars Monster.

Friday the Thirteenth
Oh noes! Lock up your valuables; Friday the 13th is here!
Paraskevidekatriaphobia is the fear of Friday the 13th. The term "friggatriskaidekaphobia" can also be used, but it's less common.
The history of Friday the 13th is a relatively recent one. There has long existed a stigma about both the number thirteen and the day Friday, but only during the 20th Century did they combine to create the dreaded Friday the 13th.

Simply Unacceptable
So, I got an A in my Chemistry lecture. Yippee skippee!
My Chemistry lab grade was just posted this morning.
B+.
.....
WHAT??
I inventoried carefully. I never missed a lab. I turned in every assignment. On every assignment I got back, I got a 9 or 10 score (except one, which was a 7). One 7 score amidst 9s and 10s would not land me a B+. So... WHY THE FUCK DO I HAVE A B+??????
I e-mailed my lab teacher and respectfully asked why I got a B+. I expect he's going to say I was missing assignments, but he's going to be wrong. At least 5 times during the semester, he would have me marked down for missing an assignment (this happened to just about everyone in the class). When I presented the graded assignment to him, he was more than happy to change the grade. But seriously, if he lost an assignment at the end and that's why I got a B+, heads will roll. I'm not going to take this lab over again because the fucking teacher can't keep track of assignments.
update: Yes, I was right. The teacher was gone to India during our final lab, so a substitute was called in to make sure we didn't burn our faces off with acid. Apparently, the sub failed to mark me as having attended, and also lost my lab report. So I have a big fat ZERO for one assignment. I told the teacher that I was indeed there and asked what could be done for me to fix this grave error. He responded that he believes that I was there, and that he'll send a request to the school administration and try to get my grade fixed. Hooray!

Mother's Day Asskicking
OK, it was more like the Day Before Mother's Day Asskicking, but close enough.
Jake and Camille and I went for a hike. Well, Jake and I hiked, and Camille rode. Seriously, she's like a frickin' Roman empress being toted around all day. Luckyyyy.

Miller Park
I went geocaching!
Miller Park is in a nicer part of town, and is mostly just a ravine between two neighborhoods. It's so nice in there, though! The only thing I heard that wasn't rushing river or twirping birds was a garbage truck one time. Other than that garbage truck noise, I might as well have been in the middle of the wilderness.

Jake and I are about to start training for a half marathon that will kill me take place in September. I've been on the Google Machine, looking up different marathon training strategies, and I keep coming across the dreaded lactic acid.

Teefers
So I discovered today that Camille is cutting her first tooth!
Part of me is singing, "Hooray! Cami has teeth! She's such a big girl!"
Another part of me is groaning, "Oh shit, my boobs are in for a hurtin'."
So nursing might get unpleasant here pretty soon.

Ensign Peak Hike
I went to Ensign Peak with some friends from Mommy&Me group. It's a nice easy hike to the top, and when you get there, there's a fantastic view of Salt Lake City!
Again, please ignore my black spot. I need a new camera!

Standing Up
The pictures are kinda sucky since I took them with my iPhone. Camille pulled herself up on the windowsill today and stood for about ten minutes, babbling to herself and banging on the window. She then attempted to sit down, but just fell backwards and bonked her head on the carpet.

So, What Now?
I took my final finals yesterday, and I was ecstatic.
"Yaaaaay I don't have to study anymore! I don't have to worry about homework! I don't have to take tests! Whee!"
Today, I went to Mommy&Me group, and then I took Camille to the doctor for a shot, and then...
Then I came home. And sat here.
I repotted my plants. I crocheted a beardhat. I watched lots of Futurama.
I'm bored.
I don't know what to do tomorrow. Go geocaching if the weather's nice, I guess. Go grocery shopping. Do... some other stuff.
I think I'm going to try to write again. I used to every day before I got pregnant, but then baby brain drain hit and I completely lost interest in writing. I've wanted to get back into it since Camille's birth, but I just never had the time. I've either been studying or tending to Camille. And now that I'm out of class for a couple weeks, and she's old enough to entertain herself (even if she refuses to sometimes), I think my opportunity is here. I have like 6 different projects that are all almost done but just need a little bit more. Maybe I can finish one! Or two!

The Spanking
This past semester, I took three classes but two had labs, so I consider it five classes: Medical Math, Physiology, Physiology lab, Chemistry, and Chemistry lab.
That's 12 credits for those of you keeping score. It was not pleasant; however, it was necessary.
The medical math class was a giant joke. "If you have an order to give a patient 500mg of Drug X and you have a bottle full of 250mg pills of Drug X, how many pills do you administer to the patient?" Really, math class? Really? Yes, really. The hardest thing was pH (as in, pH = -log [H3O+]), and that wasn't even that hard because they would give you the H3O+ concentration, and all you had to do was plug it into the equation.
The Physio lecture and lab were apparently easy. My teacher already posted our grades (I took the test today at 5:30pm), and I got a 95.5% on the final, with a 94.5% total. Which is an A. YESSSSSS!
The Chemistry class was easy. The lab was also easy. I have a 96.7% average in the lecture. So naturally, I thought the final would be nice and leisurely.
I was wrong. So very wrong.
The very first question was something along the vein of this (I don't remember exact numbers):
I think I figured it out. But I'm not sure. And that's scary, because I'm usually sure.
The allotted test time was 2 hours. There were 55 questions. I was chugging away on my test, scribbling out the answer to #22, when the teacher said, "You have one hour left, guys."
WHAT?! It's been an hour and I'm not even half done?! Idon't normally never freak out during tests. What's the opposite of test anxiety? That's what I have. Tests don't phase my brain one tiny bit. But after she gave her hour warning, I seriously plummeted into test-panic mode. I forgot how to do redox reactions. REDOX!!!!! It's the easiest reaction that exists!! AND I HAD TO GUESS!
I think I captured my opinion of the test fairly well with my Facebook post written just after I walked out of the classroom. I've edited it a little, but the spirit of the original message is still there:
Seriously, I have a 97% in the class. I thought I understood the material. I had TWO 3x5 CHEAT CARDS for fuck's sake! And you know what? They did nothing. Just like goggles.
So now I get to wig out and lose hair to stress while I wait for grades to be posted. They can be posted as late as the 11th. Guys, I don't know if I'm going to make it.
How many molecules of chlorine do you have if you have 125mL of 0.03M hydrochloric acid solution?
I think I figured it out. But I'm not sure. And that's scary, because I'm usually sure.
The allotted test time was 2 hours. There were 55 questions. I was chugging away on my test, scribbling out the answer to #22, when the teacher said, "You have one hour left, guys."
WHAT?! It's been an hour and I'm not even half done?! I

It was a bloodsucking brain-shredding zombie cyborg ninja witch sent from the depths of Hades to ravage my 4.0 GPA until it screamed for the sweet, merciful peace of death.

Hissy Fit
This video makes me laugh every time I watch it. She was very unhappy that Jake and I were eating dinner rather than paying her our full attention, so she started to yell.
April in the Es El See
I aim to do the monthly photo on the last day of the month, but sometimes I'm not able to. April's monthly shot was supposed to go down on Saturday, but we had out-of-town relatives to hang with, so it didn't get done. Today is much nicer than Saturday, anyway!
April Diaper Count
122 diapers total
39 poop
83 peep
Average of 4.1 diapers per day.

Osama dead Laden
Ding dong the witch is dead!!
And by "witch," I mean "turban-sporting asshole Saudi motherfucker who organized the attacks on the WTC on 9/11."
Witch is just easier to say; also, I'm quoting Munchkins, and as far as I know, there are no Saudis in Oz.
In case you live under a rock and haven't heard, Osama bin Laden is dead dead dead!
If you are sad that Osama bin Laden is dead, please locate the nearest pit of fire and jump into it.
So, I was a senior in high school when the 9/11 attacks occurred. I was in my second period Chemistry class, and we were in the lab when some kid came in and said, "Hey, there was a plane crash in New York or something." We were all like, "Whatever," because we all assumed it was a Cessna or something. Since my Chemistry teacher was a total asshole, he didn't let us turn on the TV to see what was going on. So I didn't know about the gravity of the events in NYC until I got to my third period French class. I walked in, and my French teacher was sitting on a desk, sobbing hysterically as the second plane hit. We spent the rest of the day watching the news and discussing how poignant that day was, with all of my teachers pointing out that we would remember that day for the rest of our lives, kind of like how they all remembered what they were doing when JFK was shot.
We're watching the news, and there is a giant party occurring in front of the White House, and another at Ground Zero. I'm sure there are giant parties in other places, but those are the only ones we're getting on the computer.
To celebrate, I'm going to make a bin Laden puppet out of a paper bag and stuff it full of bacon, and then punch it in its puppet face, and then eat all the bacon. Mmm delicious bacon.
